From kitchen to career, TV bahus are finally evolving and we are here for it!

You, I and countless other people have scorned Indian TV and for all the reasons that were far left from right. From age-old narratives and plot twists to sexist tropes where women characters are nothing better but glorified stereotypes, the standard of television really kept deteriorating, giving the woke millenials a lot to meme over. Of course, they had a lot to compare it to. Be it the 90s aka the golden period where TV represented shows like Hum Paanch, Tu Tu Main Main, Dekh Bhai Dekh and the likes or the influx of foreign shows with the boom of varied streaming platforms, television in India had a tough competition that it did nothing about. I'll come back to fleshing women characters again because that took the biggest blow - women were restricted to the kitchen, straight from the shaadi mandap.

They were sappy and so good that they were bad examples. And the ones who weren't confined to doing chores were the vamps who were plotting fights and hatching conspiracies whilst wearing bindis twice the size of the forehead! However, and thank heavens for that, things look like they are finally changing. It looks like Indian TV no more wants to glorify problematic behaviour and is trying to set foot in the right direction. Of course, it is still on the path to progress but at least women are finally doing more than just making kheer/poisoning it. In fact, we are here to talk about those changemakers cause god knows, it is time!

It surely seems like Divyanka Tripathi's Yeh Hai Mohabbatein set a trend of career-oriented women who weren't afraid to opine themselves. Soon a slew of others came up including Dipika Kakar's Kahan Hum Kahan Tum where the actress plays the part of an ambitious actress. From Simar who occasionally turned into a fly, to playing a woman who is a domestic abuse survivor with valour and compassion, it is quite a leap!

Consider daily soaps like Gathbandhan where actress Shruti Sharma is seen as ACP Dhanak Parekh or Kavach 2 wherein Deepika Singh is a marketing professional, it finally seems like writers are writing stories for the modern Indian women.

Another example of a show is Kundali Bhagya wherein Shraddha Arya's character Preeta is a physiotherapist. And while she is caring and family-oriented, the character is also more than just the sanskaari ladki cast we have seen over and over.

Seriously show-makers, give us more of these. And the twisted ones. With all other eccentricities that make female characters relatable and not just trophy mentions who live on and live by validation. Until then, here's hoping!
