King Khan, Badshaah, King of Romance… Over the years, Shah Rukh Khan has earned many tittles thanks to his fans and if it were upto us, then we’d say he deserve every bit of the love. Starting off his journey with the television show Fauji, Shah Rukh Khan rose to popularity right away. In fact, his accolades alone are enough to show what the man has achieved in his career spanning close to three decades. The actor has 14 Filmfare Awards to his name along with receiving a Padma Shri from the Indian government, the fourth-highest Indian civilian honour. Not just India, Shah Rukh has also received tittles from reputed Universities in England, France and Germany proving that the love for his work goes beyond the boundaries of India. So, as Shah Rukh Khan celebrates his 54th birthday today, we decided to list down some of our favourite movies of the superstar.
1.Baazigar (1993)
Baazigar was a revenge drama which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Kajol in leading roles. Ajay Sharma (Shah Rukh Khan) is a man on a mission. Ajay’s entire childhood is destroyed by Madan Chopra (Dalip Tahil), who took over his family business which resulted in the death of his father and his mother going into trauma. Ajay’s aim is to take back what was rightfully his and will do whatever it takes to achieve that. He kills Madan’s elder daughter Seema (Shilpa Shetty) and seduces his younger daughter Priya (Kajol) during the course of his revenge. Shah Rukh Khan was a treat to watch in this film as he convincingly was able to showcase his anger and the thirst to get back at the man who did him wrong. The iconic line, “Haar ke jeetne wale ko Baazigar kehte hain.” also derives from this Shah Rukh Khan movie.
2.Darr (1993)
Darr was a film that in many ways violated Bollywood formulas since we saw a film in which the anti hero was the lead. At the time, actors weren’t too keen to take risks with their characters and opted for more conventional roles which were tried and proven with the audience. Shah Rukh Khan though decided to not settle for what was normal and went ahead with this one. In the film, he played the character of Rahul, a man obsessed with Kiran (Juhi Chawla), a student studying in the same college. Rahul is a secret admirer of sorts but his love for Kiran knows no limits. When college is over and Kiran heads back to her home and he follows her there. Things take a turn when he finds out that Kiran is expected to get married to Sunil (Sunny Deol). This turns Rahul into a full blown psychopath and he does everything he can to end Sunil’s life. So much so, that he’s even ready to kill Kiran if he can’t have her. Darr skyrocketed Shah Rukh Khan’s fame in Bollywood and people appreciated that he was brave enough to opt for something out of the ordinary. Like every Yash Chopra film, we were treated to some lovely music with songs like Jaadu Teri Nazar and Tu Mere Samne. This Shah Rukh Khan movie also kickstarted a very fruitful partnership between Shah Rukh Khan and Yash Chopra.
3.Karan Arjun (1995)
Karan Arjun was another revenge saga starring Shah Rukh Khan that managed to make the big bucks at the box-office. Durga’s husband and eventually her two children are mercilessly killed by Durjan Singh (Amrish Puri), who considers himself to be the dictator of the village. With nowhere to go, Durga (Rakhee Gulzar) leaves everything to the hands of god and prays that he bring her sons back. God answers her prayers and seventeen years later, Karan and Arjun take birth again but the question remains will history repeats itself or will Dujan Singh be punished for his act? The portrayal of relationships in the film was heartfelt and emotional which is why it connected with the audience. Watching Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in the frame alone was enough for the audience to flock to theatres but the film did stand up to the expectations. Amrish Puri was at his best as the classic bad guy. This Shah Rukh Khan movie, on a whole, is a typical Bollywood flick loaded with tons of drama, music and action.
4. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a classic Bollywood love story that is loved and remembered by millions even today. In fact almost every single Bollywood / Shah Rukh Khan has seen this film so many times that they can even recite many lines from the film. In this Shah Rukh Khan movie, we see a boy and girl by the name of Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol) who happen to meet during a European holiday with friends. Initially, they can’t stand each other but that hate soon turns into love. However, they realise this a little late as Simran’s father has fixed up her marriage with a family friend in Punjab. Raj then goes all the way to Punjab to win her over. While the two could easily have ran away and got married, Raj is adamant that he wants to do it the right way and by earning the respect of Simran’s family. While the plot is predictable and certainly not what you'd call "never done before," you yet found yourself completely absorbed in the story, and rooting for the main characters. Apart from Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s breathtaking chemistry, a lot of credit goes to Aditya Chopra. The then debut director got absolutely everything spot on and proved that he’s a worthy successor of the Yash Chopra legacy.
5.Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)
Directed by Yash Chopra, Dil Toh Pagal Hai was a grand musical that revolved around a love triangle involving three members of a dance group. If you’re into musicals and love the Bollywood style of romance, this one is definitely for you. In the Shah Rukh Khan movie, we first see Nisha (Karisma Kapoor) and Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), two dancers from the same dance group and also two friends who share a very special bond. Nisha feels very deeply for Rahul but is afraid to tell him thinking that it might ruin their friendship. Things get complicated when Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) joins the group and catches Rahul’s attention. Every department of the film has a Yash Raj stamp over it. The director forms a deep connection of the audience with the film’s characters and emotions. Along with the performance by the cast, the music of the film received a lot of praise by audience. Songs like Are Re Are, Pyar Kar and the film’s tittle track in particular went on to become extremely popular. The background score of the film too felt upbeat and matched the film’s theme.
6. Dil Se… (1998)
Dil Se… was a story focused on the clash between love and ideology. In the film, we see Amar Verma (Shah Rukh Khan), a reporter who’s assigned to cover the festivities in the north east region of India. During his ride there, he meets a girl named Meghna (Manisha Koirala) and is instantly mesmerised by her beauty. They happen to meet again and this time Meghna tells him to leave since she’s married. Even though he tries extremely hard, he’s unable to get her out of his mind. Fate brings them together again and they end up becoming fairly intimate during a bus ride together. But sadly, she vanishes again the next day. Later on, Amar agrees to marry a girl of his mother’s choice but just before the big day Meghna returns to Amar’s life again. Little does Amar know that Preeti has her deep dark secret she’s trying to keep under wraps.
7. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was Karan Johar’s debut film and he didn’t waste any time making sure that the world takes notice of him. The maturity in which he presented his story and characters through this film was enough to turn him into an overnight star. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, the film was a love triangle that takes place amongst three friends in college. Yes, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a melodramatic film, full of colourful songs and dance numbers, but it also offers so much more than your average Hindi film. This is one film that you will probably never get tired of watching. Special credit must go out to Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol who had to portray two different stages of life in their characters but did so perfectly. The Shah Rukh Khan movie also boasted of a great supporting cast including the likes of Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal, Archana Puran Singh and Johnny Lever.
8. Mohabbatein (2000)
Mohabbatein is a film that portrays the battle between love and fear. It told us the story of two men with stern beliefs who constantly were at battle. Raj Aryan (Shahrukh Khan) was a musician who believed in love and would go to any extent for it. Narayan Shankar (Amitabh Bachchan), the head of a prestigious institute put his principles above everything in life. He also believed that love leads to pain and weakness. The film tells us the story of three young men from the same institute who want to follow their hearts but face the dilemma between love and fear. Watching Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan go head to head on the big screen was a delight for the audience. Despite a limited screen time, This Shah Rukh Khan movie also featured Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who looked her gorgeous self in every frame of the film.
9. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Another Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan collaboration and another blockbuster hit. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was as Indian as a Bollywood film get as along with a load of colours and drama, the film also gave a strong message on the importance of family, an essential element of Indian values. The film boasted of a star studded cast including the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The cast alone would be enough for people to flock to theatres but Karan Johar delivered a touching storyline along with the massive cast. The Shah Rukh Khan movie is mainly about family and loving your parents. Despite a massive cast, every character is well written which enables each of them to form a connect with the audience. It is an example of Bollywood entertainment at its grandest, and works as such.
10. Devdas (2002)
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas revolved around a man named Devdas Mukherji, who turns into a full blown alcoholic to numb his pain after his wealthy family prohibits him from marrying the woman he is in love with. In fact, the film is inspired by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s novel from the 1920’s and has also been made into films several time before. But, there were many factors about this version that made it stand out from the rest. We must give props to Shah Rukh Khan for absolutely nailing his character. He truly made the character his own and breathed a new life into Devdas, making him more lovable, and more a victim of fate than of his own tragic weakness. The song Dola Re Dola from the Shah Rukh Khan movie featuring Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was a visual delight for the audience.
11. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
Like the tittle suggests this Shah Rukh Khan movie gives out the message to live everyday like it’s your last because you never know… Kal Ho Naa Ho. Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta) lives in New York with her half-Punjabi, half-Catholic family. Her life is a mess as she’s burdened by financial problems and was surrounded by constant bickering amongst family members. But, Aman’s (Shah Rukh Khan) arrival brings a splash of colour in the dull life of Naina. Aman is like the eternal optimist which basically is Anti - Naina. He starts off as an uninvited guest in Naina’s life and eventually she grows to love him. But, little do Naina and her family know that the man who brought so much joy into their lives, has a painful secret of his own. Kal Ho Naa Ho is a such a film that is guaranteed to get your eyes wet (specially in the climax) as while watching the film, you feel that you’re a part of that story as well and feel the pain of the characters in the situation. While the entire cast did a tremendous job, it won’t come as a surprise when we say that Shah Rukh Khan stole the show.
12. Veer - Zara (2004)
Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara is a film about humanity, devotion, sacrifice, and the power of love. We see two individuals belonging from different sides of the border who meet and fall in love and are tied in a bond forever. Like every Yash Chopra film, visually every frame is stunning. Even though the plot of the Shah Rukh Khan movie is nothing extraordinary, the team of the film step up their game and make this a special watch. From Yash Chopra’s storytelling and Aditya Chopra’s sensitive writing to Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta’s stellar performances and Javed Akhtar's lyrical wizardry, everyone brought their A game for this one. Rani Mukerji too had a powerful role as a lawyer fighting against the norms of society and helping the two lovers unite once again. Veer - Zara also featured special cameos from Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini.
13.Swades (2004)
The Shah Rukh Khan movie revolves around Mohan (Shah Rukh Khan), an NRI working for the reputed space agency NASA. Mohan feels nostalgic of his home and all he can remember from his childhood was his nanny, who he respects a lot. He takes the decision to track her down and bring her to the US to live with him. The film makes clever use of the contrast as on one side we see the highly developed world of NASA, which has been at the forefront of advances in space research and on the other we see a poor village in India which struggle to even have some of the most basic facilities like electricity. Mohan feels he it’s his responsibility to give back to the society that made him who he is. It is very evident that Asutosh Gowariker has made this film from the heart and the cast deliver a sincere performance as well.
14. Chak De India! (2007)
Chak De India was a film inspired Indian Women Hockey Team’s win at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Shah Rukh Khan plays the character of Kabir Khan, a former hockey player who is ridiculed by the nation as he’s accused of fixing the game ensuring that India suffer defeat by the hands of Pakistan. To redeem himself, he makes a return as a hockey coach of the Women’s National Team. Kabir tries to instil a number of values in the team like unity in diversity, strength in weakness, and putting the team above oneself helping them gain enough belief to win the tittle. The best part about this film is that while it is patriotic it stays away from jingoism. Even if you don’t watch hockey religiously, you’ll be fascinated by the sport thanks to the exciting and fast paced way it’s been presented in. Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Sattar minute’ speech from the film is without a doubt a highlight and just goes to showcase King Khan’s acting prowess. His speech before the final boosts the morale of the team and they go one to make him proud by playing out of their skins on the pitch. Along with Shah Rukh Khan, the women portrayed the team’s player received a lot of praise for their work in the film.
15. My Name Is Khan
While the 9/11 terror attacks were horrible and ended up costing the lives of thousands, the after effects of the event were more drastic than anyone could imagine. Almost all the muslims in the United States were looked upon as terrorist and had to face a lot of humiliation and even physical assault by the locals. The film gives us a glimpse of this by telling a story of one man named Rizwan Khan (Shah Rukh Khan). Even though he might not be considered normal by society since he suffers from Asperger's syndrome, in many ways he was more than just normal. Rizwan finds love in Mandira (Kajol) and begins a family along with her and her son Sameer, from a previous marriage. All seems to be going smooth until that dreaded day. Rizwan and his family are subject to racism, physical and verbal abuse and feel a sense of hatred from the entire community. So, Rizwan sets out on a mission to inform the President of the United States that even though his name is Khan, he isn’t a terrorist. Even though the film is a love story at heart, Karan Johar gives an important message that humanity comes over religion.
