Model-turned-actor Kabir Duhan Singh will be seen sharing screen space with Kannada star Kichcha Sudeep in Pailwaan and this will be his second film alongside the actor. Kabir plays a boxer in Pailwaan and is seen locking horns with Sudeep, which we noticed in the trailer. Kabir looks fitter and stronger as ever and looks every bit like a professional boxer. And ahead of the release of Pailwaan, we caught up with Kabir Duhan Singh and spoke about various things including his next film Pailwaan. Here are excerpts from the EXCLUSIVE chat:
What efforts did you have to put in to match the exuberance of actors like Suniel Shetty and Sudeep?
My debut in Kannada cinema was with Sudeep sir only. And Pailwaan is my second film with him. When I heard the script of Pailwaan, I was unwell due to viral fever and wasn't strong at that point in time. When director S Krishna sir narrated the story to me, I told him I would need 4 months to get into the shape. Because I play a ruthless boxer called Tony Sebastian in Pailwaan. His only motto is to kill and not just win any match. And because of this nature of his character, he gets banned by the Federation. So, I had to prepare hard for this and began prepping up for it. I started taking personal classes from a boxer to understand. And my character is very arrogant too for which I had to study the role a little more and prepare. I did some research about how personalities like Tony walk and talk, and tried to inculcate it in Pailwaan. And parallelly I was taking boxing classes besides working out for the role because I had to play a professional boxer. I had only one thing in my mind I should look like a boxer. Thankfully, I had time on hand and I prepared very hard for Pailwaan. I changed my diet and had to quit eating a lot of stuff.
Having worked in more than 30 films, I hadn't done such a character ever before. All those were antagonists who had the regular elements. But this one was totally different. And after looking at me post these months, Sudeep sir congratulated me and welcomed me on board Pailwaan. It was a heartwarming gesture from him. I had to maintain my physique as well because I was working on four films simultaneously and I also signed my first Bollywood film alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
For Pailwaan, the fights were designed by professional stunt directors from outside India. And what you will see in the film will be something very uncommon in Indian cinema.
This is your second Kannada film with Sudeep. How much has he changed since you know him?
I feel that if you love and respect South film guys, they will reciprocate with double of it. And Sudeep sir is just exceptional. For me, we have become like a family now. We talk a lot about what he is planning next and what my projects are. I feel he hasn't changed a bit since I know him. He is still the same even now, but a lot more closer to me now.
You have worked with many South stars like Ajith, Pawan Kalyan, Sudeep. What makes them so special for fans?
Firstly, I feel so blessed to have acted and debuted in South with these stars' films. It feels so great to be working with legends like them who are so grounded and humble. And from what I have seen closely, all these stars do a lot of helping work for people. Like Ajith sir, he does so much for people with an intention to help. And I'm saying this because I have seen it with my eyes. Ajith has built a hospital, has gotten a surgery done for a fan's ailing mother and a lot more. The best part is he keeps away from all the limelight like social media and does all this charity without a noise. And it is the same with Pawan Kalyan sir, Sudeep sir and others. They do so much for people specially when there is a crisis. There were floods in North Karnataka recently and Sudeep sir was one of the first to volunteer for helping.
I will tell you an incident about Ajith sir. We were shooting in Milan for Vedalam and Ajith sir was done with his scene. I was about to finish my shot and snacks were being served on the sets. Ajith sir brought a plate filled with snacks for me to eat and gave it himself. And I was amazed looking at this gesture. You know the best part? He addressed me saying Kabir sir. I think it is this niceness makes him so special for fans and everyone around.
Your work is more in South than Bollywood. Is it an effort proactively?
When I was in modeling, I was clear in my head. I wanted to begin my acting career in South industry. After I began looking for opportunities, Jill happened in Telugu. And the rest followed. I have, thankfully, so far worked in some great films. I'm just going with the flow. I'm getting opportunities in Bollywood now for the last year and a half. I've begun shooting for a film alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui for which I waited pretty long. I believed in following a certain path and I'm happy it worked and has shaped up this way. But come what may, I will not quit acting in South films. I'm what I am today because of my South films and I'm ever grateful for that. I keep getting calls from production houses for web series because of my South films which get dubbed into Hindi and are played almost every day on TV. So, South films will always be special for me.
