Singer Jubin Nautiyal who has crooned for soulful tracks like Zindagi Kuch Toh Bata from Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Bandeyaa from Jazbaa and such is back with yet another romantic number. His latest independent track, Hai Pyaar Kya, which as per Nautiyal, 'will remind of you a decade of Indian music,' hit the internet a few days ago. The song has already been received well by the viewers and has crossed 3 million views till the time of filing this article. Amidst his new song, the Dehradoon lad got into an exclusive conversation with BollywoodLife, wherein he spoke about his latest track, his five years-long music career, and his love life, like never before.
Concerns for Independent music
Jubin who is quite passionate about independent music aspired to become an independent singer, which led to his entry in the music space. However, with the latest trends, Nautiyal is quite concerned about the future of the genre. "Sadly in our country right now, the labels dictate the scene (independent music)," Jubin sighed, "It has become solid commercialization. Now even they (indie music) are sounding like film songs and vice versa. With all of this, it might happen that there would be no independent music in the future."
No eye candy
The music video which has been directed by Rocky Khanna features popular TV actress Kritika Kamra. Jubin and Kritika play romantic interests in the music video. While Jubin did have qualms about his acting skills, he felt, Kritika's "superior acting skills" helped him in front of the camera. "We could have gone for eye candy," Jubin while talking about Kamra's involvement in the project, "Usually in music videos, people take up pretty girls who don't know acting. So you don't see proper actors in them. And I wanted a proper actor for this one. Because when an actor performs, they bring a lot of intensity on screen. That's how Kritika was on board."
The journey of the track
The journey of this track is as unique as the song is. While sharing the journey, Jubin reminisced, "We did this song like 2-3 years back. I had worked on a melody long back. It was in there in my bouquet of songs." Jubin then added, how Rocky (Khanna, the music videos' director and co-music composer) and he were jamming one day and Jubin happened to read one of the pieces (which are the lyrics of the song) that Rocky wrote in his book. "Suddenly the melody which I made was ringing in my head and then I started to sing the song. The whole melody and the words were just like two parts of a puzzle. We didn't have to work too much on it."
No rat race for Jubin
Jubin trained himself with proper education before entering the Indian music space. However, despite that, he never believed in struggling. "If you think you are struggling in something while you are at it, then it is not your passion maybe." Furthermore, he added that it is his passion towards music that keeps him going. "I'm not here to make money or get famous," he stated. He further added, "I'm not into that weird market rat race. Or else I won't be able to sing better. (A song) being a chartbuster doesn't affect me."
The highest high
In his five-year-long music journey, the singer has seen several highs and lows. Nautiyal, has given his voice for the biggest of stars like Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, however, while talking about his highest high of life, he revealed, that it is "happening right now". "This is the first time, I'm introducing a new kind of song," he shared.
Being replaced from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was the lowest low
While is high is currently going on with his dream of indie music becoming true, his lowest low has occurred a few years ago. Jubin shared, "I've been in a point where due to unethical behavior of some music labels, I had to," he paused and continued, "There was a lot of hard work that I did on different songs which were removed because of music business politics." When asked if he can name a few songs, he named, "Baarish and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil". "These two songs happened at the same point and that was a very difficult time of my life."
Not moved on
They say a true musician comes from the place of heartbreak. Jubin whose repertoire has a majority of poignant tracks, admits of healing from a broken heart. "I've had breakups, romance and a fair share of love." He further went to speak on a philosophical tangent talking about relationships. "Our parents and that generation had more emotions towards each other and more depth to their relationship. I think that depth is being lost today. The younger generation doesn't have that much attachment." As the conversation continued, the Humnava singer opened up about the status of love in his life. "I had love in life and she is the one I still feel about. However, I'm single now," Jubin divulged. Talking about the romantic songs that he has curated, Jubin admits that these songs are dedicated to her. "These songs are for someone. I won't name them. Although, I'm single I do sing for someone," Jubin shedding more light on it further added, "It was a moment that I shared with someone and we both moved on, but we both want to live in that moment that we shared. While making music, I recreate those moments."
"I basically just add a background score to those situations," he chuckled and concluded.
